A note about simple syrups: You can buy pre-made simple syrups at a specialty store, but whipping up a batch at home is a lot less expensive. We have included instructions in the notes of each individual recipe when possible.
The basic recipe for simple syrup is to combine 1 cup water with 1 cup sugar in a medium saucepan. If you’re adding other ingredients for flavor (like berries or herbs), this is the time to add them in. Bring it all to a boil, then reduce heat and let simmer until the sugar is dissolved. Remove your mixture from the heat, cover, and let it steep for 15 minutes. Strain and let cool completely.
