Wine-based punches have been around since the Roman Empire. The name “sangria” comes from the Spanish word for “bleeding,” referring to the drink’s red color. Today, you can enjoy red, white, and even rosé sangria.
Try our recipe for Spiced Sangria for your next cozy get-together or holiday party. Our recipe is for one glass at a time, but this drink can be batched in advance to allow the flavors some time to meld. It’s also much easier to batch drinks when you have guests over, so you have more time to enjoy their company!
Our sangria starts with a cabernet, but you can substitute whatever dry red wine you have on hand. It also calls for cinnamon simple syrup, which is easier to make than you may think:
In a medium saucepan, dissolve 1 cup sugar into 1 cup water by bringing it to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer until the sugar is dissolved. Throw a few cinnamon sticks into the mix and let it steep on the heat for 5 minutes. Remove your mixture from heat, cover, and let it steep for an hour (or more, depending on how bold of a flavor you want). The simple syrup will have a light, warm brown tone from the cinnamon infusion. Strain and let cool completely.
Now, grab the rest of your ingredients and get mixing!
